City Lights draws inspiration from nights spent looking at the stars. Constructed as a through line, the main theme represents the fascination we have with the beauty of lights. The production opens with a stoic harmonization representing our complacence with the artificial lights of a city, then moves to the melancholy “City of Stars” (from La La Land) which references the stars hidden by the glow of our cities. The production ends with performers motivating others to turn out their lights and enjoy the natural light of the stars above as the main theme returns with a bright reharmonization.
